Race Week 2 Highlights - Mr Swivell helps The East go top on night two at Wolverhampton

Updated: Aug 1

The East leads Racing League following night two at Wolverhampton, on a card where six of the seven teams sent out winners.

The East tops the table with 289 points after leapfrogging London & The South (270) and Scotland (259), although Charlie Fellowes’ side is the only team to have played both allocated jokers.

The highlight for The East came in Race 13 as well-backed 7/2 favourite Mr Swivell led from pillar to post under Daniel Muscutt, with Kevin Philippart de Foy’s four-year-old now having won three of his last four starts.

Muscutt said: “Mr Swivell likes to get on with things. He is an uncomplicated horse, with a good stride and rhythm when he is allowed to bowl away. Looking at it pre-race, I did not think there was anybody to take me on in front. I built through his gears from three down and he galloped out nicely. I rode him first time out – a while ago now – and he has developed a lot physically. Connections have plotted their way through the grades and he has been a good servant.”

Yorkshire produced the result of season five so far in Race 12, with Marco Botti’s Hyperchromatic leading home a one-three worth 80 points after team captain Leonna Mayor opted to play a joker.

Mayor said: “Hyperchromatic and Double Parked had good chances according to the betting. Marco has been great to deal with. Hyperchromatic was the first horse he flagged that he wanted to run here. The way he has won, he is obviously a talented horse. He was green going down, he was green in the straight, and Jo [Mason] could not pull him up after the line. I think we have seen a pretty nice horse.”

Scotland claimed the first one-two of this year’s competition in Race 10, in which 5lb claimer Mason Paetel impressed again as he guided James Owen’s Charging Thunder to a neck success over the Paul Mulrennan-ridden La Pulga following a sustained battle.

Team manager Alex Steedman said: “Wow, what a picture that was turning for home. One guy in Paul Mulrennan who has been doing it at the top level for years and another guy in Mason who I think will be doing it for years to come. Even in defeat, I thought Paul was tremendous. He glides across from stall 12 without using too much gas, drops anchor and controls the race. Unfortunately for Paul, he had a horse with real classy form in Charging Thunder coming around his outside. It was just great to watch.”

Progressive filly Stormy Impact headed up two successes for The North, with the Richard Fahey-trained filly coming with a powerful run to take the feature, Race 11, under in-form apprentice Warren Fentiman. It was a second significant handicap success for horse and rider this season following the 3YO Dash on Derby day.

Stormy Impact’s owner-breeder Steve Bradley said: “She is awesome, isn’t she? The mare [Colorada] bred The Ridler, who won the Norfolk Stakes three years ago. We also have a Too Darn Hot yearling. With Stormy, I still cannot get over watching her win at Epsom – I have never seen a horse finish a race as fast as that. She did the same again today. It is now a question of where we go next? Given what happened with No Half Measures in the July Cup, I wonder if she is good enough for the Abbaye, although she may not get her favoured ground. There are plenty of opportunities between now and then.”

Admirable eight-year-old Intervention also carried The North’s colours to victory in Race 8, with Mick Appleby’s stalwart taking his record at Wolverhampton to six wins from 29 starts.

Laurence Bellman, part of winning syndicate The Horse Watchers, said: “This is wonderful. Intervention is eight years old and that was his 104th run. He loves the all-weather, especially Wolverhampton, and we fancied him from that draw [2] with Ali [Rawlinson] back on. It was all set up for him. We just love him. He is a legend.”

Ireland failed with its joker play in Race 10, having gained a second win of the season with Sudden Flight in Race 9, with Finley Marsh doing the steering for trainer Richard Hughes.

Marsh said: “Drawn two, we had to be sharp away and Sudden Flight was. At the furlong pole, he was looking around and pricking his ears but he hit the line strongly. There is more to come from him. He is improving all the time and I think he is quite a smart animal going forward.”

The Ian Williams-trained Silent Age provided defending champions Wales & The West with a belated first winner of the campaign in Race 14, foiling one of The East’s joker selections Immediate Effect by a short-head.

Winning jockey Edward Greatrex said: “The race panned out OK. He was quick away from the gates and got a nice lead. The horse in front was wandering about, so before that one hung too much, I had to commit my horse. He stayed the trip well. I am pleased to end the night like that.”

With 141 points on the board from 12 rides, London & The South’s Richard Kingscote has a sizeable lead in the top jockey standings. Daniel Muscutt is second on 101, with Mason Paetel third on 73.
